(C) In ecological succession, the first organisms to colonize a bare area are known as pioneer species. On bare rocks, the process of succession begins with the colonization of lichens. Lichens secrete acids that help in the weathering of rocks, which leads to the formation of soil. This soil then supports the growth of bryophytes and subsequently other higher plants.
