(A) portal system is a part of the circulatory system where blood vessels begin and end in capillaries without passing through the heart in between. In a typical circulatory system, blood flows from the heart to the tissues and back to the heart. However,in a portal system, blood collected from one capillary bed is transported through a portal vein to another capillary bed before returning to the heart. An example is the hepatic portal system, which carries blood from the digestive tract to the liver.
