Vedclass · Answer

(B) The $Bt$ cotton plant is a genetically modified crop created by introducing the $cry$ genes from the bacterium $Bacillus$ $thuringiensis$ into the cotton genome. These $cry$ genes encode for crystal proteins (Cry proteins) that are toxic to specific insect pests, particularly lepidopterans (tobacco budworm, armyworm),coleopterans (beetles),and dipterans (flies, mosquitoes).Specifically,$Bt$ cotton was engineered to provide resistance against bollworms (which are lepidopteran pests).Additionally, the primary goal of developing $Bt$ cotton was to increase agricultural productivity by reducing crop loss due to these pests, thus resulting in a high yield.
