To extract the silk,the cocoons are boiled in hot water to kill the pupa and soften the sericin (a protein that acts as a glue). The silk thread is then unwound from the cocoon starting from the outer layer towards the inner layer. Therefore,the reeling process proceeds from the outside to the inside.
