(D) The Cell Theory was proposed by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann. In $1838$,Matthias Schleiden,a German botanist, concluded that all plant tissues are made of cells. In $1839$,Theodor Schwann,a British zoologist, reported that animal cells had a thin outer layer which is today known as the 'plasma membrane'. He also concluded that the presence of a cell wall is a unique character of plant cells. Based on these hypotheses,Schleiden and Schwann together formulated the Cell Theory, which states that all living organisms are composed of cells and products of cells, thus establishing the cell as the structural and functional unit of life.

Who discovered that the cell is the structural and functional unit of living organisms?
