(A) When white light passes through a prism,it splits into its constituent colours (dispersion). According to Cauchy's equation,the refractive index of a material depends on the wavelength of light. The refractive index is higher for shorter wavelengths (violet) and lower for longer wavelengths (red). Since the angle of deviation is directly related to the refractive index,violet light (having the shortest wavelength) undergoes the maximum deviation (bends the most),while red light (having the longest wavelength) undergoes the minimum deviation (bends the least).
