Alkyl halides react with sodium in dry ether to give hydrocarbons containing double the number of carbon atoms present in the halide. This reaction is known as Wurtz reaction.
$2 R-X + 2 Na \longrightarrow R-R + 2 NaX$
$2 CH_3-CH_2-Br + 2 Na \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH_3 + 2 NaBr$
$2 (CH_3)_2CH-Br + 2 Na \xrightarrow{\text{dry ether}} (CH_3)_2CH-CH(CH_3)_2 + 2 NaBr$

Assertion: $2-$Bromobutane on reaction with sodium ethoxide in ethanol gives $1-$butene as a major product.
Reason: $1-$Butene is more stable than $2-$butene. According to Saytzeff's rule,$2-$butene should be the product which is more branched or substituted compound and hence, more stable than $1-$butene.
