(N/A) Larger animals, such as birds and mammals, have a smaller surface area relative to their volume compared to smaller animals. Since heat loss or heat gain is a function of surface area, smaller animals with a large surface area relative to their volume tend to lose body heat very fast when it is cold outside. Therefore, they have to expend much more energy to generate body heat through metabolism. In contrast, larger animals have a smaller surface area-to-volume ratio, which helps them conserve body heat more effectively.
