(N/A) When detergents are added to water, the surface tension of the water decreases, which allows the water to wet the clothes more effectively. Detergent molecules are hairpin-shaped,consisting of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. The hydrophobic tails attach to the dirt (oil/grease),while the hydrophilic heads remain in the water. This process helps to emulsify the dirt, lifting it away from the fabric surface and allowing it to be washed away easily.

$A$ metal sheet $4 \ m$ on a side and of negligible thickness is attached to a balance and inserted into a container of fluid. The balance to which the metal sheet is attached reads $0.50 \ N$ and the contact angle is found to be $0^{\circ}$. $A$ small amount of oil is then spread over the metal sheet. The contact angle now becomes $180^{\circ}$ and the balance now reads $0.49 \ N$. The surface tension of the fluid is:

$A$ thin metal disc of radius $r$ floats on the water surface and bends the surface downwards along the perimeter, making an angle $\theta$ with the vertical edge of the disc. If the disc displaces a weight of water $W$ and the surface tension of water is $T$,then the weight of the metal disc is:
